Issues we untangle
Tongue Tie
When the tongue is tethered to the floor of the mouth, it inhibits its ability for our body to function in a healthful way. Tongue ties can lead to many problems and disorders for people in an unsuspecting way, such as disordered breathing, speech impediments, chronic pain throughout the body, and underdevelopment of the oral cavity. A frenuloplasty is performed by a dentist to release the tissue from the floor of the mouth. Myofunctional therapy is essential in the prevention of reattachment of the tissue.
Tongue Thrust
Myofunctional therapy can correct a tongue thrust by retraining the tongue to rest in a position that allows it to swallow effectively. Tongue thrusts can lead to an open bite, speech impediments, and TMJ disorders.
Sleep disordered breathing
When a sleep disorder like sleep apnea is present, it's crucial for the tongue to rest in the correct position and for the muscles of the oropharynx to be strengthened in a way that promotes efficient, restorative breathing. A targeted series of strengthening exercises can help enhance sleep quality in individuals with mild to moderate apnea.
Open mouth breathing
Chronic mouth breathing can be the result of many issues, but myofunctional therapy is essential at helping to restrengthen the muscles of the face to help the lips seal with more ease. When left unaddressed, mouth breathing can lead to an underdeveloped face, sleep disorders, dental concerns, and even behavioral issues.
